Manray was Capitol Hill's default. The Stranger once called Purr 'the new Manray, meaning that's the default, where you go to regroup if your night's not going as it should' — and that framing tells you everything. Manray was the gravitational center of the Capitol Hill gay scene: the video bar you started the night at, ended up back at, and measured every other bar against. When it closed, the hole it left was big enough that a new bar had to be defined in relation to it.
